Miss Namibia Goes On Despite Drama

Miss Namibia Goes On Despite Drama

May 21, 2019, 10:00 AM

It seems like, despite all the drama that is revolving around Miss Namibia 2019, the show will go on. It has been rowdy ever since the announcement of the top 30 semi-finalists with social media rearing its nasty bullying and shaming side. The announcement was received with negative criticism and outbursts from some social media users across the country.

In February the organizers of the annual pageant embarked on a search for a new beauty queen to carry the title of Miss Namibia. 255 entries were received of which 30 were selected as finalists. One of the requirements of the pageant includes an online registration with a clear photograph. Social media went into a frenzy from the moment the photographs were released, criticizing the beauty pageants and made unwelcome remarks.

Some of the posts on social media read:

"Call me crazy, one of them will be in the semi-finals of miss Namibia 2019. Lord where/what have we done wrong as Namibians" "Mexico, Nigeria...name the countries, each has ladies that are attractive and not so attractive.... and the latter never get chosen." And "Miss Namibia. That's it? that's all we got?"

Previous crown holders including Miss Namibia 2017 Sune January condemned the bashing of the finalists, saying it is shocking that it is mostly women who are discouraging fellow women in pursuit of their dreams. She asks for nothing but respect towards the finalists.

It also turns out that the rumours of a contestant dropping are indeed true as the semi-finalist Michelle Pretorius confirmed to have dropped out of the competition. In an interview with the Namibian, the model said she was dropping out due to other commitments.

"I am currently studying in South Africa. I have noticed that the Miss Namibia contest will take a lot of my time and for now I want my main focus to be on my studies," she said. She further said that it was her childhood dream to enter the national pageant and would enter again next year.

The pageant director also confirmed the withdrawal of the model and said that she respects her wishes to withdraw and wished her all the best.

8 June will see the semi-finalists battle on the runway as the top 12 will be selected at the Winter Ball to be held at the home of Miss Namibia, the Windhoek Country Club, and Resort. The event will be hosted by comedian Tapiwa Makaza and personality Hermein Elago.
