King of Ma/Gaisa Phura Passes On

This is indeed a sad day for the Namibian music industry as one of the renowned musicians was pronounced dead early this morning. 

The King of Ma /Gaisa who had eight albums on this name and great songs including “epa boko boko, ama baka baka" has passed away after battling sickness and being in and out of hospitals at 2 am this morning. 

Andre Gariseb who worked as promoter and publicist for Phura in his heydays confirmed his passing as well as fellow Ma/ Gaisa artist Master Green.

The last album under his belt was released in 2016 titled Ta !husen’ which when loosely translated means don't give up. 

Since the news surfaced, social media messages of condolences have been pouring in from fans including prominent figures such as Lazarus Jacobs who said one needed a towel to dance to Phura's music and may he rest in peace.

Some of this fans uploaded his work, reminiscing on how he had made their childhood days memorable with this music.

Other fans expressed how wonderful Phura's work was thanked him for his contribution to the Namibian music industry and to the youth of Kunene Region as a whole.


Phura Duwe who hails from Khorixas started his career as a young keyboardist in 1996 from which he eventually worked himself up to become one of Namibia’s icon musician and  producer. Some Namibians in memory of Phura vowed to listen to his music all day.
